Joining Clubs in College

Posted by admin  Published in College Advice, College Social Life

If you are new to college life, maybe you have heard about the various student clubs or groups that exist in colleges. Virtually every college out there hosts a menagerie of different student clubs that cater to different aspects of a student’s life, basically anything that can unite people together to discuss something they share in common. Below we will see what comprise the most popular groups throughout colleges these days.

-Pastime Clubs: These are arguably the most common type of student clubs. Ranging from things like coin collecting to video gaming as well as music interests to poetry. The beauty of this is while some might call you crazy for liking something, the people in this type of club will wholeheartedly understand your interests.

- Cultural Clubs: These kind of clubs are based on the heritages or religions of the student body. For example, there might be clubs for students who are of Italian origin, groups for African Americans, Hispanics, and any other culture or nationality you can imagine. In terms of religions, there can be Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and other such groups.

- Sports Teams: Yes, these too are a type of club. How much better can it get to share your love of sports with others than actually playing them with fellow sports enthusiasts? This is certainly a way for the sports minded individual to connect with his peers on a deep level.

Whatever it is that tickles your fancy, there is probably a student club dedicated to it. If not, you can usually start a new one!

College and Mental Health

Now that you find yourself in college, you will be experiencing new and challenging situations, both academic as well as social, or dealing with your persona. In a college setting, students begin to find themselves usually in more meaningful social relationships whether it be friendships, dating, and that sort of scenario. These can and usually do differ from high school relationships for example for the simple reason that college students have matured since those times and can experience more in depth connections as a result. Below are some pointers on how to get through this time of transition on a mental level.

- Be sure to mingle with others. Whether it be through academic clubs or getting to know classmates, remaining socially active is one perfect way to learn from your peers and see how people interact with each other. After all, we model most of our behavior after those we observe and admire.

- Do not spend much time with individuals who are abusing addictive substances or doing other counterproductive things. This can only negatively affect you by distracting you from more important things like homework and may even get you involved in dangerous behavior.

- If you are ever having doubts or periods of depression, speak to friends who care about you and definitely seek help from school counselors. As much as it may not seem like it at times, there are definitely people out there who can help you through a rough spot.

By following these steps, you are sure to have an easier social experience in college.

Joining Clubs in College

Posted by admin  Published in College Social Life

Now that you are in college, you have probably considered joining a few student groups. Student groups are a perfect way of meeting others who share hobbies, ethnic or religious background or those who have other sorts of things in common with you. Being that most colleges have a student base in the thousands, chances are you will be able to find plenty of people who are compatible with you and will keep you socially nurtured while getting through college.

Likewise, in most colleges, the number of student clubs varies greatly and for good reason. For the simple reason that there are so many reasons out there for students to form clubs and share something in common, for this reason alone many colleges boast dozens if not hundreds of different clubs. These can include various sports, video games, board games, political affiliation, religious and ethnic groups, nationality, native language, philosophy, film and animation enthusiasm, music appreciation, musicians and so many other things that suffice as something a club can be formed around.

Obviously, if you are a freshman in college and do not have many new friends as most do not when they enter college, joining groups related to your personal interests is a great way to get into the social scene on your campus. If for no other reason at all, having a group of friends who share something in common with you will provide for fun times and shoulders to lean on when you need them. Why not see what clubs your college has?

So, you are now in college. Most people believe that once in college, their social lives will change. This is mostly true for many reasons. The great thing about college is that there are many opportunities for you to meet new people and make new friends, if you so wish to do that. From clubs, organizations, meets and other university sponsored events, you will find yourself brought together with a slew of other students who are currently in the same social situation as you.

In most cases, being in college means that you will be dealing with more mature students than in high school. Understandably, while most adolescents go through an immature stage, most will mature by college age. With greater maturity present, you can connect with others on an intellectual level. Some people will make it a point to go out there and introduce themselves to random people in an effort to see how many respond in a numbers game or probability type of approach. Others who are more socially conservative may speak to other classmates after getting to know them in a comfortable setting.

One fantastic aspect of college is student clubs. In these clubs you will be able to find others who share the same hobbies and educational or career related interests. Considering that most colleges consist of thousands of students, chances are you cannot go wrong. Make yourself available and keep a positive outlook and you will be sure to have an enjoyable social life in college.
